The Opportunity:
Serve as the Command Linguist and Interpreter for the USSOUTHERN Command Headquarters Team and command suite. Provides interpretation services for Senior Leaders during engagements with high-level partners in Spanish and Portuguese . Travel is extensive in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility.
Responsibilities:
Provides interpretation services for the Combatant Commander, Military Deputy Commander, Civilian Deputy Commander, the Senior Enlisted Advisor, and others, in Spanish and/or Portuguese (Brazilian) to English.
Accompany USSOUTHCOM leaders on OCONUS travel supporting the principal with interpretation services during engagements with foreign senior leaders. Likewise, support engagements when hosting foreign dignitaries at SOUTHCOM Headquarters and during virtual engagements.
Be on-call for critical conversations with foreign leaders. Ensure that the USSOUTHCOM leader fully understands the literal and nuanced meanings of the foreign leader's statements or interrogatives.
Accompany USSOUTHCOM Senior Leaders at social events (formal and informal) where there will be engagements with foreign leaders. Perform simultaneous and consecutive interpretation during these events and at ceremonies.
Maintain sophisticated vocabularies related to a wide array of topics such as foreign affairs; military operations/strategies; security assistance and cooperation; logistics; science, technology, and innovation; information technology; and other germane topics.
Translate documents for the Command Group, as required.
Work together as a member of a team of interpreter/translators in the HQ.
Assist the Commander's Action Group to fulfill its administrative tasks such as TMTs, individual training, filing, preparing correspondence, etc
Qualifications:
Previous experience being the primary interpreter for a senior principal or group.
Current Secret security clearance but be eligible for a Top Secret/Specialized Compartmented Information clearance.
At least 3 years' experience working with or on the OSD or Joint Staff, a Service Staff, CCMD or Operational Staff, a Defense Agency Staff, or an NGO/IGO Staff.
Experience working with the military and familiarly with the military lexicon.
The ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Certification of training as an interpreter (consecutive and simultaneous)
At least a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as, but not limited to, linguistics, Spanish, Portuguese, history, or area studies.
A current Tourist Passport with an expiration date more than 6 months away.

The proposed salary range for this position is:
$62,200-$130,600
