Job Summary
Battelle is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Synthetic Biologist/Engineer for the National Security Business Unit. This full-time position is located in Columbus, Ohio . Some domestic and international travel is anticipated.
As a Synthetic Biologist/Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing biological systems to solve some of the world's most pressing problems. You will work within a diverse team of scientists and engineers to design and construct new genetic circuits, optimizing bacterial strains for protein production, improve titer-rate-yield metrics in metabolic engineering focused projects, and other exciting research and development areas. You will provide technical leadership and technical support to laboratory, scale up, and field studies involving engineered microorganisms and cell-free systems across a broad number of projects along with leading projects that enhance capabilities and/or support the development of new technical approaches within the Bioscience Center.
Responsibilities
Support research projects focused on engineering of microorganisms and fungi to produce industrially relevant molecules and bio-derived high-performance materials
Development of synthetic genetic circuits and understanding and interfacing with computational biologists for modeling of microbial systems.
Support research projects focusing on bioprospecting of novel microorganisms, genes and proteins from environmental samples.
Optimize and develop molecular biology tools with application to a variety of microbiological systems.
Preparing and presenting technical reports and presentations
Conduct technical work and produce quality results within budget and schedule.
Assisting in preparing scientific journal publications and presenting at professional meetings
Assisting in the development of proposals, marketing plans and identifying business opportunities
Train, mentor, and lead junior technical staff.
Some domestic and potential international travel is anticipated.
Key Qualifications
A Ph.D. (or MS and 5 years' experience or BS and 10 years' experience) in biological or chemical engineering with experience in synthetic biology, systems biology and metabolic engineering and computational tools.
Ability to travel, including participating in field work.
U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.
Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory and in the field to perform assigned duties.
The ability to work in a team environment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working on research projects for both governmental and commercial clients.
Crrent or previously held security clearance.
Experience with protein purification, ELISA, HPLC, AKTA, and/or sequencing.
Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).
Experience with microfluidics and laboratory automation.
