Job Summary
Battelle’s Cyber Trust and Analytics Department in Beavercreek/Dayton, Ohio is seeking a Junior Cyber Applied Mathematician to join our multi-disciplinary team, bringing together the brightest minds ranging from Physics to Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering. The team works to develop, evaluate, and test unique physical and embedded security solutions for our government.
As a Cyber Applied Mathematician II at Battelle you will have the opportunity to hone your skills analyzing hard mathematical problems that arise from physical and software systems. Daily activities include mathematical analysis, algorithm implementation, and developing mathematical models in close collaboration with engineers and scientists.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate to design and implement of machine learning, data mining, data fusion, and data engineering techniques applied to cyber security problems
- Learn and become fluent in the details of security related domains to devise data driven solutions – this can range from software fuzzing to micro-electronic supply chain analysis
- Improve existing techniques to solve hardware security problems
- Identify and articulate strengths and weaknesses of solutions, conclusions, and problem approaches during technical discussions.
- Prioritize and complete structured assignments with mentoring from senior staff. May seek guidance in subsequent tasking.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or similar).
- Interest in one or more of the following areas:
- Algebra or Number Theory
- Cryptology
- Theoretical Computer Science, especially Quantum Computing
- Theory of Machine Learning (especially deep and reinforcement learning)
- Numerical Analysis or High-Performance Computing
- Symbolic Computation or Solvers
- Dynamical Systems / Control Theory
- Discrete Mathematics, especially Graph Theory
- Signal or Image Processing
- Working knowledge of Python.
- Excitement about learning new technical subject areas and curiosity about cyber security problems.
- Must be a US citizen and able to maintain / obtain a Top-Secret Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a related field with 5 years of experience, or a PhD with 2 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of educations and/or experience in a related field.
- Experience with deep learning methods and with microelectronic design workflow
- Electronics bench skills such as digital and analog test & measurement
- Ability to generate verification test benches for simulating and validating microelectronic designs
- Experience in vulnerability analysis for either software or hardware
- Understanding of VHDL and/or Verilog hardware description languages.
- Familiarity with compiled languages like C, C++, or rust
- Familiarity with shell scripting languages like bash, zsh, or csh
