Job Summary
We are currently seeking an experienced Business Development Director to support the development of the overall growth strategy of our Environment and Infrastructure business programs. This position will ideally be based out of our Crystal City, VA office, but other locations and remote will be considered.
You will champion new business opportunities for our environment, energy, transportation, and infrastructure security support within the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Energy (DoE), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other civilian agencies. We are seeking a candidate with a proven track record of client engagement and pipeline development in industry. The candidate must possess the technical expertise and relationships with a wide range of U.S. Federal civilian agencies as a priority for this role. Additional relationships with the Navy and Army are a plus.
In addition, the candidate should have experience identifying market targets, experience with the federal budget process, call plan development, account planning, opportunity assessment and qualification, and alignment to internal investment to align with customer markets. The candidate must demonstrate successful performance leading business development and capture to win large government opportunities, while developing an enabling pipeline designed for aggressive growth.
Responsibilities
- Identification of government opportunities to build pipeline for growth into adjacent accounts across government civilian and military accounts
- Management of $3+B pipeline to include account strategy and management - client engagement, external engagement, win strategy, funding behavior, contract mechanisms, competitive knowledge, market awareness, capability, and expertise alignment to met and unmet government needs
- Create new government programs for cutting edge Battelle R&D across environment, energy, and infrastructure offerings
- Develop and maintain an extensive network of relationships with existing and potential Battelle clients
- Drive growth through quality execution of pursuit, capture, and proposal with commitment to voice-of-the-customer
- Drive proposal activities including identifying proposal managers, content managers, technical managers, and cost & pricing support
- Participate in the continuous evolution of the Environment & Infrastructure growth strategy by contributing real-time client and market knowledge
- Maintain close partnership and collaboration with program leadership and subject matter experts to align existing capabilities and new research and development (R&D) to client needs and wants.
Key Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering or Science-related technical field and 15 years of experience in federal civil or defense business development or government contracting. A master’s degree is preferred.
- Proven track record of identifying and winning new business for an organization with $400M+ annual sales.
- Experience with, and approach for, managing a $3B+ pipeline of opportunities.
- Ability to identify key growth areas and develop new business aligned within Battelle’s Environment & Infrastructure strategy.
- Existing network of clients and collaborators in science and technology work.
- Strong capabilities in developing both compelling and compliant proposals.
- Experience with Client Relationship Management (CRM) tools/platforms.
- Adaptive, decisive, persuasive, and proactive approach to managing multiple priorities in a fast-growing organization.
- Excellent professional skills oral, written, and presentation - for senior level external and internal engagements.
- Approximately 30%+ travel.
