The National Security Department (N912), located in Annapolis Junction, MD, within MITRE's Intelligence Center has the responsibility to deliver a cross-organizational set of projects for the MITRE Intelligence Center. We provide cybersecurity and SIGINT expertise to ensure the resilience and survivability of DoD, IC infrastructure, and National Security Systems (NSS) in the face of adversary threats. Our mission is to enable a cybersecurity posture that promotes protection and prevention of actions taken to compromise mission critical devices, services, platforms, products, and software of interest to the U.S. and its allies. Our highly agile team provides support across sponsors using knowledge and skills such as cybersecurity engineering, applied research and development, reverse engineering, software engineering, systems engineering and integration, offensive and defensive cyber operations, advanced cyber threats, adversary methodologies, cyber threat intelligence analysis, and technology analysis and assessments.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The Lead Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer will be responsible for leading and/or contributing to one or more concurrent MITRE efforts delivering Artificial Intelligence expertise to our Sponsor. Depending on the size and scope of the project, you may be expected to work as an autonomous subject matter expert and trusted advisor in a single support position or as a leader/expert member of a project team.
As a Lead AI Engineer, expect to be responsible for the following activities given the specific project:
Builds, deploys, implements and/or modifies machine intelligence applications, including digital agents (e.g., chatbots), pattern recognition applications, (e.g., image, text, speech recognition) and classification.
Develops machine learning and statistical modeling techniques such as decision trees, logistic regression, Bayesian analysis and others to develop and evaluate algorithms to improve product/system performance, quality, data management and accuracy.
Uses a combination of dataflow programming or pre-trained algorithms from an existing AI framework (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, MXNet, Cognitive Toolkit, Torch) but may also develop own scripts and algorithms in C++, Go, Java, Python, or equivalent languages.
Applies deep learning technologies to give computers the capability to visualize, learn and respond to complex situations.
Can work with large scale computing frameworks, data analysis systems and modeling environments.
Adapts artificial intelligence, including machine learning, to areas such as virtual/augmented reality, robotics, command and control, decision support, planning and other areas.
The Lead AI Engineer will work in close collaboration with the sponsor and MITRE colleagues from multiple disciplinary backgrounds (e.g. engineers and technical experts, mission operations/domain SMEs, data scientist/analysts, program managers etc.) to translate operational mission needs into sound technical requirements, develop and/or review proposed plans, and contribute to the development of technical solutions to advance the sponsor's mission.
Basic Qualifications:
Current TS/SCI with CI Polygraph clearance.
Due to the lengthy clearance process, candidates without an existing TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph cannot be considered for this opening.
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Experience applying repeatable processes and developing artifacts (e.g., requirements documents, plans, proposals, risk management plans), and other documents as necessary.
Demonstrated success in managing multiple complex concurrent assignments.
Experience translating operational mission needs into acquisition, technical, and programmatic requirements.
Excellent critical and strategic thinking abilities, as well as written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to create win-win solutions with a positive "make it happen" attitude.
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidate will have significant substantive experience with mission IT-focused AI solutions.
Demonstrated experience and capability to advise the federal government on all aspects of the AI domain in order to implement and adopt innovative AI solutions.
Experience providing technical advisory support within the Intelligence Community.
Previous experience in a role responsible for leading technology insertion, including the implementation and adoption of novel technical solutions for critical mission challenges.
