The Airframe and Structures Engineering Directorate is seeking high-performing mechanical engineering interns that are interested in working on jet-powered, unmanned aerial drones used for tactical systems, weapon systems testing and warfighter training. We are seeking a candidate with a strong math and physics background, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail. A solid grasp of Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Physics and Linear Algebra, will help you understand and predict the behavior of a system to ensure the product is successful. The agile multidisciplinary team will provide the intern exposure to various fields of mechanical engineering analyses. The internship offers an overview of the design and development process used in unmanned aerial vehicle applications.
Typical responsibilities:
Support engineering staff responsible for structural analysis of composite and metallic airframe structures. Carry out hand calculations as well as finite element analysis (Finite Element Analysis) using Patran/Nastran and Altair INSPIRE.
May have opportunity to assist with structural loads development and requirements development as part of the analysis planning effort.
May have the opportunity for dynamics analysis such as normal modes analysis and correlation, basics of aeroelasticity and developing a FEM that is accurate for mass and stiffness.
Assist thermal/fluids analyst in predicting temperatures of air vehicle structure and components using hand calculations and tools such as Thermal Desktop and Sinda Fluint.
MATLAB data processing for shock/vibration flight test data.
May prepare and present analysis review material for internal peer reviews.
Interface with mechanical design engineers and manufacturing engineering to complete analysis tasks.
COMPENSATION: $25 per hour
DURATION: Summer internship (approximately June - August)

Required:
In process of obtaining a BS or MS degree in Engineering.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Office and/or manufacturing environment.
Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time.
Ability to perform repetitive motion (keyboarding, 10-key, phones).
May be required to lift up to 50 pounds in accordance with KUAS General Safety Training guidelines.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
0-25% - May be required to travel between locations.
