We are seeking a Senior Cyber-Physical R&D Network Engineer who will support the Resilient Cyber-Physical Systems Section in the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to increase ORNL’s science contributions and help manage research across the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) and related Intelligence Community (IC) mission areas. This position entails researching, designing, building, and maintaining complex operational technology (OT) research and development networks.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support national security agendas as they relate to the protection of national energy assets and critical infrastructure.
- Design, build, and maintain complex R&D OT networks. Assess partners’ needs and recommend appropriate products and services.
- Work with a team of diverse IT personnel
- Lead the development of research proposals related to critical infrastructure protection and cyber-physical security.
- Promote ORNL/partners cyber security research and development capabilities as they apply to the national security community.
- Provide scientific and technical advice for national level cyber security issues and ORNL programs.
- Mentor and train early-career engineers to help guide them on paths to success.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and eight (8) years of network engineering. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- 3 years of experience supporting Cisco based networks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to think creatively in network and IT system design.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills, along with superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure while maintaining excellent communication and creative thinking.
- Up to date network certifications (Network+, CCNA or similar)
- Knowledge of OT systems and networks
- Knowledge of the unique requirements of R&D networks
- Experience with multiple network environments (Cisco, Juniper, Arista, etc.)
- Excellent documentation skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the DOE complex.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Q clearance with SCI:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
