Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Policy Intern for Summer 2025. This position is hybrid located in Washington, D.C.
The Battelle Washington Office is home to our Public Policy and External Relations team, which represents Battelle to Congress, the Executive Office of the President, Federal agencies, foreign Embassies, and public policy organizations with information on Battelle’s programs and projects. Additionally, the office of External Relations often works with universities and public policy organizations, including professional scientific societies, business consortiums, and other ad-hoc organizations to align Battelle’s agenda with theirs in order to help impact legislation in support of research and development, STEM education, and other programs and projects important to Battelle and the National Laboratories.
Responsibilities
- Attending Congressional hearings, press conferences, and policy briefings on issues of interest to Battelle (energy, environment, science, national/homeland security, and life sciences) and writing summaries of these events for Battelle management and staff.
- Conducting research on legislative initiatives and maintaining up to date summaries of legislative actions for management.
- Maintaining awareness of energy/climate change/competitiveness related issues with regard to States, National Governors Association, and international organizations.
- Providing support to the BWO staff in responding to Congressional inquiries and laboratory management and contract research requests.
- Acting as support staff for BWO operations, including telephone coverage, and general office activities as necessary.
Key Qualifications
- Must be pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree with at least two years of undergraduate coursework completed.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with individuals across a broad spectrum of political, scientific and professional disciplines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Must be U.S. Citizen
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior governmental internship experience
- Prior experience writing for publication – student newspapers, trade journals, etc.
- Knowledge of current public policy surrounding scientific, technological, and STEM initiatives.
