Department Summary:
MITRE's Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) Solutions department in the Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy Innovation Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Group Leader (GL) position in McLean to join our department leadership team as a first-line supervisor responsible for developing and growing our talented team, fostering MITRE's culture, developing department strategy, and work-shaping. The department applies human-centered engineering to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and software development practices, empowering diverse human teams and AI-enabled systems to produce greater outcomes together than either could alone. The department supports a wide range of sponsors and internal customers and is active in MITRE's internal research program. The qualified candidate should be an experienced software engineer with working knowledge of and experience with AI fundamentals. This is a 10% position with the expectation that the selected candidate will lead and contribute to one or more work efforts aligned with the department capabilities and strategy, focusing on AI systems architecture and prototyping.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Mentor and coach 8-10 group members, conduct regular performance and development conversations, identify opportunities and resources for staff growth, and aid in career development
Engage with work leads, business networks, and the department leadership team to help staff find relevant and engaging work based on staff skills, interests, development goals, and career aspirations
Hold regular discussions with staff and their work leads to ensure mutual understanding of expectations, performance, and growth opportunities; provide appropriate interventions and guidance, as needed
Recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions and impacts of group members
Communicate/cascade to group members the direction, intent, and messaging of MITRE leadership
Participate in the department recruiting and hiring process, including screening resumes and candidates, interviewing on technical panels, and providing critical feedback of candidate presentations
Work with department leadership to develop and champion initiatives to increase staff engagement
Assist MITRE and government sponsors in defining, executing, and applying research to solve challenging HCAI problems in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense
Identify new customers and opportunities, help shape new work programs, and generate new business for the department
Help shape department strategy and engage in the development of department capabilities
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar field; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
Experience engineering applications of AI and Machine Learning (ML) technologies
Strong fundamentals in software engineering, object-oriented programming, web application development, and software architecture
Strong desire to work with, coach, and mentor staff and serve in a management role
Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to foster effective working relationships with staff and internal and external customers
Strong verbal, briefing, and written communications skills
US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of AI/ML algorithms and their appropriate applications
Understanding of human-centered artificial intelligence engineering principles
Previous management, mentorship, or leadership experience
Broad knowledge of the department's work with the ability to make connections across programs and across the corporation
Experience working across multiple sponsors
Experience in building and/or shaping work programs
Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with MITRE colleagues across diverse backgrounds, skillsets, departments, divisions, and management levels to develop and achieve outcomes set by staff members
Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance
