Position Announcement
The Department of History, Humanities, and Modern Languages at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah, is seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified individual for either an Assistant Professor (tenure track) or an Instructor of the Practice (professional track) position in American Sign Language. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to a rapidly growing ASL program to train future interpreters towards an ASL interpreter certification and/or degree. This position starts July 1, 2025. Classes begin in mid-August 2025. Responsibilities
The successful candidate (tenure track or professional track) must engage in all aspects of teaching, including:
Teach all levels (1000-4000) of ASL interpreting and related courses, leading to certification and/or degree. Classroom instruction equal to 24 credits per academic year for tenure-track positions, or 30 credits per academic year for professional-track positions.
Hold office hours, submit grades per University deadlines, and conduct required course evaluations.
Advise program students.
Mentor part-time instructors.
Handle program course coordination on a rotating basis.
Review and assist with developing ASL curriculum sufficient to prepare students for state and national certification testing.
Assist students in developing interpreting skills and analyzing ASL development and production.
Participation in the life of the program and department, including department meetings, program coordination tasks, and curriculum design.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean.
Tenure track faculty must also engage in a variety of service expectations associated with the program, department, college, university, community, or professional organizations.
Work with the department chair, the dean, and other faculty to advance the department mission and university mission.
Fulfill faculty service responsibilities at all levels of the university, community, or professional organizations associated with the discipline.
Be engaged in a scholarly agenda appropriate to the applicant's professional expertise, which could include traditional academic research or creative work. While UT is a teaching university, we value faculty who are engaged in their fields and who can bring that professional work into the classroom. UT values scholarship of discovery and scholarship of pedagogy/andragogy.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
For tenure-track Assistant Professor:Terminal degree (PhD or EdD) required, with an undergraduate or graduate degree in Deaf Studies, Deaf Education, or related field preferred. Teaching experience at the university level is strongly preferred, a commitment to program building and student services, and professional engagement with their field of study.
For professional-track Instructor of the Practice: Master's Degree in Interpreting Pedagogy or related field. Significant teaching experience at the university level is strongly preferred, as is the ability to work as a collaborative partner in program building, and a commitment to student services.
For all candidates:
Interpreter Certification (NIC, NAD, RID, CDI, UTAH PROFESSIONAL, or equitable qualification) required; some interpreting experience expected.
Membership in various interpreter, deaf, and interpreter training organizations.
Focus, interest, and expertise in college level teaching (finalists will be required to demonstrate competence in a teaching module).
Ability and willingness to adapt courses to current technology.
Ability to communicate clearly with students, staff, and colleagues - manually, orally and in writing.
An eagerness to engage with faculty, staff, administrators, and constituents or advisory boards to develop ways to improve the educational experience of students interested in pursuing careers related to American Sign Language.
Expertise in course, curriculum, and program development preferred.

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:Full-time (9-month) tenure-track or professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins January 1, 2025. Annual salary of $57,000-$60,000 for Instructor of the Practice (professional-track) and $62,000-$66,000 for Assistant Professor (tenure-track), with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
