Responsibilities You will serve as a Long Range Fires (LRF) Safety Engineer/Scientist in the Electromagnetic and Sensor Systems Department, Platform Systems Integration Safety Branch (Code B73) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. You will support a distributed System of Systems (SoS) safety program in support of Long Range Fires (LRF) capability development. You will work with a team of scientists and engineers performing hazard analysis and safety risk assessment at the SoS level and integrated weapons control system level and collaborate/coordinate with stakeholders of constituent programs. You will perform systems safety engineering on Naval platforms, combat systems, weapon systems and support elements in accordance with required standards, instructions, guidance and policy. You will lead and perform the planning, development, and generation of systems safety engineering plans, analysis, risk assessments and other documentation required for the proper communication, execution, and tracking of system safety programs. You will participate in executing system safety engineering across the LRF SoS lifecycle, including research and development, integration, verification and validation, and operations. You will participate in technical reviews of safety program artifacts and provide technical recommendations to a team of scientists, engineers, and other system safety professionals. You will apply systems safety engineering to conduct, oversee, and direct hazard analysis of the LRF program in accordance with all applicable standards. You will coordinate analysis results and follow-on actions across the LRF and constituent programs. You will plan, prepare and coordinate systems safety related research proposals and other documentation required for the proper communication of research related ideas and the results of research. You will assist the Program Lead in monitoring the technical health of the respective system safety program, applying risk management concepts and best practices to identify technical risks. You will utilize Combat System/Combat System Element safety and/or system engineering experience to ensure and maintain collaboration between a diverse group of LRF program sponsors and engineering activities. You will provide well thought out advice and guidance to managers, supervisors, peers, and sponsors on technical aspects of systems or concept development. You will work with a team of diverse scientists and engineers, including military, civilian, and contractor representatives. You will participate as an active team member in meetings, testing events, project tasks, and other requirements as assigned. You will participate in and provide system safety engineering guidance to support various Safety Review Boards. You will effectively and professionally communicate orally and in writing with peers, sponsor organizations, key stakeholders, higher-level management, and industry on behalf of yourself, team, organization, and the U.S. Navy. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled by a General Engineer (0801-series), a Physicist (1310-series), a Chemist (1320-series), an Operations Research Analyst (1515-series), a Mathematician (1520-series), or a Computer Scientist (1550-series) depending upon the qualifications of the candidate.
