Department Summary:
The Cyber Infrastructure Protection Innovation Center (CIPIC) is developing and applying technologies, practices, and approaches to protect mission-critical infrastructure from malicious cyber or non-kinetic attack or disruption. Mission-critical infrastructures include critical infrastructure sectors (e.g., energy, transportation, water, etc.), the Defense Industrial Base, and Government systems-of-systems such as weapon systems and large-scale command & control, computing, communications, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C5ISR) systems. The Senior Principal Subject Matter Expert for Energy, Oil and Gas work cross-functionally to provide subject matter expertise across MITRE and our Sponsors to drive impact in protecting our critical infrastructure.
Roles & Responsibilities:
CIPIC is seeking a Senior Principal Subject Matter Expert for Energy, Oil and Gas to lead cutting-edge research and development initiatives aimed at enhancing critical infrastructure and operational technology system. You will work closely with senior leadership and oversee multiple projects to ensure the protection of energy systems and critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Your role will involve strategic planning, team leadership, and collaboration with various stakeholders to drive innovation in securing Energy, Oil and Gas equities.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy:
Lead and manage cyber innovation projects, focusing on critical infrastructure cybersecurity for Energy, Oil and Gas and other relevant sectors
Develop and implement advanced cybersecurity strategies for OT systems, ensuring alignment with national security objectives
Provide strategic guidance and technical expertise to support organizational goals and key stakeholders
Research and Development:
Conceptualize and conduct groundbreaking research in OT cybersecurity, including Energy, Oil and Gas systems, cyber-physical systems and industrial control systems
Lead high-risk, high-visibility experimentation and operations to identify and mitigate cyber threats to critical infrastructure
Oversee the development of new cybersecurity technologies and solutions for OT systems in Energy, Oil and Gas and other critical infrastructure sectors
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including private sector Energy, Oil and Gas, government agencies, industry partners, other academic and research organizations as well as MITRE FFRDCs and Innovation Centers to identify cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities and solutions
Present research findings and policy recommendations to senior leadership and industry forums
Engage in business development efforts to expand the company's critical infrastructure cybersecurity portfolio with a focus on Energy, Oil and Gas
Team Leadership:
Lead and mentor a team of researchers and engineers in the development and deployment of cybersecurity measures
Ensure the team is well-organized, trained, and equipped to handle the complexities of Energy, Oil and Gas cybersecurity challenges
Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the team
Basic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
Secret clearance is required
Be able to obtain Top Secret Security Clearance (or DOE Q)
Advanced degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
Prior experience in Energy, Oil and Gas and cyber and familiarity with regulatory requirements in Energy, Oil and Gas cybersecurity
Proven track record of leading innovative projects and teams in a high-stakes environment
Deep technical expertise in cybersecurity research and development
Strong knowledge of Energy, Oil and Gas operations critical infrastructure security as well as its national security context.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
Expertise in cybersecurity technologies and best practices, particularly in the Energy, Oil and Gas context
Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience growing and managing technical teams
Ability to conduct and lead cutting-edge research and experimentation
Excellent project management skills, with a focus on delivering high-impact results
Ability to work with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives
This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional Engineer License
Previous experience working at an Energy, Oil and Gas asset owner/operator or supporting organization
Extensive experience in Energy, Oil and Gas cybersecurity, with a strong understanding of cyber-physical systems and industrial control systems
Experience with the design and implementation of Energy, Oil and Gas safety instrumentation systems (SIS)
Experience with industry standards bodies relevant to Energy, Oil and Gas
Experience with cyber-physical systems, IoT, and industrial control systems in Energy, Oil and Gas contexts
Demonstrated ability to brief and work with senior government and military leaders
