Purpose and Scope:
The machinist produces prototype, new, and replacement parts and repairs broken mechanical parts.
Essential Responsibilities:
Interpreting written instructions and specifications.
Planning and laying out of work; using a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
Setting up and operating machine tools both manual and numerically controlled.
Shaping of metal parts to close tolerances.
Making standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds of machining.
Knowledge of the working properties of the common metals.
Selecting standard materials, parts, and equipment required for this work.
Fitting and assembling parts into mechanical equipment.
Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
The incumbent should be a graduate from an accredited technical mechanical institution or equivalent or have the equivalent training.
Additional requirements may be a combination of technical education and experience of four years in a machinist position.
Must possess a working knowledge of the technical terminology or language structure related to the equipment and documentation of assigned responsibility.
Performance of these activities requires current knowledge in the proper use of all hand and machine tools.
May be required to qualify for a government security clearance and must possess a valid state issued driver's license.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
Shop environment in which mechanical equipment is operated, is loud and noisy, and some pieces of equipment have exposed moving components, routine lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling and carrying, and constant use of vision and mental alertness is required.
