TITLE/SALARY GRADE: Food Service Worker 2, SG 9
DURATION: Temporary - full time
SALARY: $19.25 - (NOTE: current or reconstructed salary for State employees in accordance with NYS Audit and Control)
The SUNY ESF Wanakena Campus Food Service unit provides staffing for the Ranger School and the Cranberry Lake Biological Station. The Food Service Worker 2 (FSW2) position includes supervision of subordinate staff in food preparation and service activities. The Wanakena Campus Food Service team serves 19 to 21 cafeteria style meals per week to groups ranging from 20 to 70 per seating. The team also serves food to special groups visiting the campuses, as well as during commencement, open houses, family weekends, orientations, barbecues, and other special events. At special request, bagged meals may be provided to students and visiting groups that will be working outdoors. Specific tasks for the FSW2 position include:
Plans and assigns appropriate coverage for dining room and/or kitchen activities. Effects changes as necessary.
Assigns and provides direction to subordinates (Food Service Worker 1's, federal work-study students, and student assistants) in food preparation, production, quality assurance and work training. Includes training in portion control and accurate measures to provide consistency in meal quantity and quality.
Reviews the work of subordinates for compliance with established standards and schedules.
Inspects for proper procedures including routine food preparation, food portion control, appropriate dish washing and other cleaning actions, and the maintenance of pertinent sanitary standards.
Evaluates individual work performance of subordinate staff. Initiates corrective action as appropriate.
Investigates and resolves routine complaints relating to assigned areas.
Assists with menu preparation as appropriate. Effects menu changes as necessary
Weighs and measures ingredients; prepare and cook various meat, fish, hot cereals, vegetables, soups, desserts and baked goods to include special dietary options when necessary
Maintains appropriate temperature and holding times.
Maintains awareness and prepare for all allergies, medical and special diets, for example: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-intolerant, nut allergies, and others.
Monitors and maintains food and supplies inventories in stockroom, freezers, and coolers; ensures inventory is properly rotated when new stock is received
Checks in deliveries, including inspection of product on arrival to ensure expiration dates are appropriate and no damaged product is accepted
Communicates with kitchen manager and food service staff regarding general kitchen needs; receives and responds to emails; keeps records.
Maintains work and storage areas in a neat, clean and sanitary condition.
Reviews with staff and adhere to proper NYS Health Department safety and sanitation standards.
Job Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be reachable on current Civil Service Food Service Worker 2, SG-09 list, currently hold the title of Food Service Worker 2, SG-09, or be eligible for transfer per Civil Service rules
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
Working knowledge of basic food preparation procedures
Working knowledge of facility and agency food service procedures
Working knowledge of proper storage procedures for food
Working knowledge of the basic arithmetic functions of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to communicate and exchange information on food service matters
Ability to supervise a small staff
Basic knowledge of principles and practices of supervision
Working knowledge of cleaning procedures and properties of commonly used cleaning substances
Ability to perform cleaning requiring medium to heavy effort
As assigned, ability to use and manipulate kitchen utensils and equipment
