Job Title: Phlebotomist IJob Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures and ensuring proper patient information updates.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
Update patient information and collect/store specimens as per established procedures.
Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously.
Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Understand and follow all physicians' orders accurately.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures.
Follow protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens during transport.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department training sessions.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
Essential Skills
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (if required).
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
Strong customer service skills.
Good hygiene and appearance, including clean-cut fingernails.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changes.
Strong processing experience, especially in a busy medical environment.
Work Environment
This role is based at a women's medical center with a busy site handling 110+ draws per day. The team consists of five providers, and the site currently has one computer with two more pending setup. The typical working hours are Monday to Thursday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Friday from 8 AM to 12 PM. The role requires flexibility and the ability to work under pressure due to the dynamic nature of the environment. Strong teammates will support the candidate in this role.
