Summary:
Esports Specialists provide targeted, skill and age-appropriate instruction, coaching, and mentorship in New York Edge's after-school programs, with a focus on esports. They lead New York Edge's Esports Model, in alignment with the Sports & Wellness Department, to foster a safe and inclusive environment for youth to develop their gaming and strategic thinking skills. Esports Specialists organize and facilitate esports programming at their site, guiding students in responsible gaming practices, teamwork, and strategic skills that extend beyond the screen. They participate in esports-specific professional development training and use the Esports Curriculum throughout the school year to design and implement engaging, skill-building activities. Additionally, Esports Specialists prepare students for participation in organization-wide tournaments and leagues, modeling professionalism, sportsmanship, and positive digital citizenship. They cultivate an atmosphere of fun and learning, while maintaining professional boundaries and acting as role models for New York Edge participants.
Work Schedule:
9-15 hours per week.
Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Essential Job Functions:
Motivate students to engage actively in daily esports activities and skill development.
Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured, age-appropriate, and have clear learning goals, based on the esports and digital wellness guide.
Communicate regularly with the Program Director and the Sports and Wellness Department regarding program schedules, leagues, tournaments, and special events.
Encourage and prepare students to participate in organization-wide esports activities and competitions.
Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures to maintain order and focus among students.
Organize, lead, and promote interest in various esports genres, such as strategy, team-based, and solo-player games, along with exercises in reaction time and critical thinking.
Explain gaming strategies, techniques, and safety procedures, and demonstrate responsible gaming practices.
Enforce digital safety rules and regulations governing esports activities and the proper use of equipment.
Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
Prepare and set up facilities and equipment for group esports activities.
Greet new participants, introduce them to team dynamics, explain gaming etiquette and rules, and encourage active participation.
Evaluate activities to ensure they are engaging and achieving the desired educational and developmental outcomes.
Adapt teaching methods and materials to cater to students' varying skill levels and interests.
Promote and support the progressive development of each student's gaming and teamwork skills.
Emphasize positive character development, including respect, teamwork, and perseverance.
Provide homework support during Academic hour as needed.
Adapt each esports activity to ensure safe and responsible gaming in the provided space.
Required skills:
Must be knowledgeable and skilled in esports, with experience teaching and mentoring youth in a structured setting.
Prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred.
Ability to follow a curriculum and adapt it for different skill levels.
Demonstrated responsibility, reliability, and punctuality.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
May be required to walk up and down stairs.
May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred.
A minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
A minimum of one year of teaching experience is required.
Must have passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development.
Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.

The Esports Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.
At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
