SUMMARY
Food Explorer Specialists provide age-appropriate nutrition education to youth in New York Edge after-school programs. This part-time position is geared towards engaging children in an exciting but realistic way to promote healthy behavior changes they can model for their peers and families. The Food Explorer Specialist position works with the Program Director to ensure the location sites' after-school wellness needs and goals are met.
WORK SCHEDULE
9-15 hours per week.
Monday through Friday -- 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Ensure daily activity lesson plans and projects are structured, age-appropriate, and have clear learning goals based on the provided Food Explorer and physical activity guide.
Communicate with the Program Director and Center for Food Explorer and Wellness regarding the calendar of programs, leagues, tournaments, and special events.
Motivate and provide students to participate in organization-wide Food Explorer activities.
Establish and enforce safety rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
Instruct participants on the activities' principles, techniques, and safety procedures and show them how to use materials and equipment properly.
Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students.
Evaluate activities to determine if they are producing the desired results.
Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.
Promote and ensure the progressive development of student skills and character development in all youth.
Most New York Edge Food Explorer Specialists are expected to provide support during Academic hours.
Adapt each activity to ensure safe participation in the space provided.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Must be knowledgeable and skilled in and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth.
Prior experience teaching and instructing youth preferred
Must be able to follow a curriculum
Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual!
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or Equivalent required; some college preferred
Preferred Degree in or currently studying Nutrition, Public Health, and/or subject that applies.
A minimum of one year of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
A minimum of one year of teaching experience is required.
Must have passion for New York Edge's mission and demonstrated interest in education and youth development.
Candidates qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity are also preferred.
Must be 18 years of age or older
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
May be required to walk up and down stairs.
May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
Work is performed mostly within the Wyandanch School District but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.
The Food Explorer Specialist will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents, and school administration.
At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
