The Operating System Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the organization's operating systems to ensure high availability and security at Fort Irwin. The individual in this role should have in-depth knowledge of operating system administration, system optimization, and adherence to DoD cybersecurity standards.
Administers, develops, runs tests, implements, and maintains operating system and related software. Establishes and implements standards for computer operations for compatibility between hardware and software, according to specifications and parameters. Troubleshoots and resolves software, operating system, and networking problems. Schedules, performs, and monitors system backups and performs data recoveries. Recommends hardware and software upgrades according to growth statistics and disk space forecasts. Provides technical support for system users. Performs work under direct supervision. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
Responsibilities
Installs, configures and maintains Windows and Linux operating systems on servers and workstations.
Monitors system performance, optimize resources, and ensure system security.
Applies patches and updates to operating systems manually and by automation.
Troubleshoot and resolves operating system-related issues promptly.
Collaborates with the cybersecurity team to implement security measures and ensure compliance with DoD standards.
Conducts regular system backups and recovery procedures (preferably experience in Veritas NetBackup).
Stays updated with the latest trends and best practices in operating system administration.
Performs SCAP scans and fill out STIG checklists.
Database Management, including creating and executing queries and creating/modifying mapping between databases.
Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy Object (GPO) management.
Hyper-V file services, DHCP, Print Services, IIS, Apache, OCSP, Microsoft SQL software management.
Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor's degree and 1 year experience or no Bachelor's degree and 2years experience.
(1) one-year experience working in UNCLASSIFIED and CLASSIFIED environments.
IAT-II certification is required (CompTIA Security+, CCNA Security, CySA+, GICSP, GSEC, or SSCP).
CompTIA Linux+ or Server+ required.
Active SECRET security clearance required.
Proven experience as an Operating System Administrator (Systems Administrator, technologist) or similar role.
In-depth knowledge of operating system administration and optimization.
Familiarity with DoD Cyber Workforce standards and requirements.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
May be required to drive vehicle if needed to perform tasks at Fort Irwin, CA. Must have a valid Driver's License.
Pay Range
$90,000 - $106,000
