We are currently seeking qualified applicants for Group Leader for Human Analysis and Biometrics (HAB)in the Cyber Resilience and Intelligence (CRI) Division. CRI leverages expertise in cybersecurity, mathematics, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and engineering to provide national security and intelligence community partners with cybersecurity science, critical infrastructure resilience, machine-augmented intelligence, identity science, and systems vulnerability science. The HAB Group Leader position affords the unique opportunity to lead talented R&D professionals and establish them as a premier R&D organization by setting a vision, developing a strategy to achieve that vision, and enabling true impact on critical national security missions through a team-based approach and commitment to excellence. HAB performs R&D focused on detection of insider/outsider threat, development of cyber persona for user identification and intent, identity science for individuals and small groups/networks of potential adversaries, and advanced biometrics. Advanced biometrics R&D includes multi-modal-based identification, computational imaging, privacy-preserving methods, bias mitigation, non-cooperative subject identification, and identification in adverse environments.
Purpose:
The R&D Group Leader brings together a team of peers to achieve global scientific leadership, develop a group strategy, foster ORNL's culture, and enhance individual excellence in R&D. They report to and collaborate with the R&D Section Head to implement the group's scientific vision, nurture career growth, uphold ESH&Q standards, and promote a diverse and inclusive work environment.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Lead, support and mentor a diverse group of scientists and engineers focused on research and development in the areas of biometrics and identity science, and data science in support of these disciplines.
- Initiate, lead and perform independent and impactful R&D on an ongoing basis as evidenced by, for example, innovative S&T delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc.
- Develop a vision with senior staff and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the HAB group for future success.
- Develop and implement plans to pursue new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
- Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
- Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.
- Attract a quality, diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class R&D and aspire to be the best in their field.
- Exercise scientific integrity in proposing, performing, and communicating research.
- Exemplify a commitment to excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and work cooperatively to leverage scientific capabilities across ORNL.
- Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group.
- Encourage staff to “think and dream big,” take appropriate risks in their work, and develop skills that will enable them to pursue new ideas, scientific passions, and research programs.
- Advance the reputation of the group members and standing of the group as a whole through establishing collaborations, professional society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
- Support ORNL through encouragement of derivative classifier, lab space management, and technical reviewers for the section and division.

Basic Qualifications:
- PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, data science, or a related field and six (6) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated experience leading R&D teams and conducting original research in identity science and biometrics or related areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated track record in national and/or international engagements that seek to sustain and strengthen the identity science and biometrics community.
- Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories (or similar R&D organizations).
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Special Requirements:
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
