POSITION SUMMARY
The Information Technician (IT) Telephony Instructor provides instructional services to meet the Coast Guard’s unique needs in support of information equipment and software for training activities. The instructor will provide expert skills and knowledge to deliver instruction to USCG students, focusing on ensuring students achieve the necessary skills mandated by the course curricula and course objectives. Instructors are required to evaluate students’ performance by verifying the students understanding of the course material, competency of learned skills, and the student's ability to demonstrate applied knowledge.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- The instructor will provide expert skills and knowledge to deliver instruction to USCG students, focusing on ensuring students achieve the necessary skills mandated by the course curricula and course objectives.
- Instructors are required to evaluate students’ performance by verifying the students understanding of the course material, competency of learned skills, and the student's ability to demonstrate applied knowledge.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years’ experience as a primary classroom instructor.
- Must possess subject matter expertise in the following areas:
- Public Address Systems.
- Public Branch Exchange (PBX) programming.
- Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) fundamentals.
- Data Networks.
- Network Hardware.
- Client/Server data networks.
- Network hardware.
- Client/server environments.
- Microsoft products.
- Red Hat Linux.
- Troubleshooting procedures.
- Electrical safety.
- CPR.
- Telephony network diagrams.
- Electronics theory and operating principles.
- Application(s) of existing and future technologies.
- Equipment interoperability and compatibility.
- Backbone and horizontal cabling requirements and standards.
- Telephony concepts.
- Troubleshooting series circuits.
- Test equipment used to troubleshoot cabling.
- Layout of network and telecommunication closets.
- Fiber optic cable inner duct work.
- Install both ST and SC style cleave-and-crimp connectors.
- Install UniCam connectors.
- Install both ST and SC style pre-loaded epoxy connector (Hot Melt).
- Install both ST and SC style epoxy connector.
- Test and document cable installation for loss using an Optical Power Meter (OPM).
- Repair a cable using a mechanical splice (FiberLok II).
- Repair a cable using a fusion splice.
- Retest and document loss after repair.
- Use of an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) and Visual Fault Locator (VFL) to troubleshoot a fiber cable installation.
- All instruction shall be for systems IAW CG CI 5200.16 and DoD Directive 8570.
- No security clearance required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Classroom conditions will be comparable to a typical office setting with work hours of 0700-1900 based on the training schedule, with a typical 8-hour workday. Field/Range conditions requires wearing PPE, working outside in weather during all four seasons, with prolonged periods of standing and moving while delivering training.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must pass a standard physical examination that includes, medical history, height, weight, blood pressure, and meet required fitness standards throughout employment under the contract. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain drug free for the duration of the contract. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. of equipment or stock inventory and stand for period of up to 8 hours per day.
