GST seeks a Senior Scientist for Program Operations and Services to serve as the technical authority for CoastWatch environmental data production, quality monitoring, and operational sustainment. This role provides scientific leadership for the development, validation, and operation of satellite derived ocean and coastal environmental products and ensures that program services meet operational reliability and quality expectations.This position has been approved for a hybrid schedule with onsite days in an office in College Park, MD.
This Position Is Contingent Upon Contract Award
Primary Duties:
Provide scientific leadership for CoastWatch satellite derived products, including ocean color, SST, SAR based winds, flooding, and sea ice.
Oversee near real time operations, reprocessing activities, and quality monitoring for operational products.
Evaluate product performance and identify opportunities for improvement while maintaining operational continuity.
Support evaluation and validation of satellite algorithms used in CoastWatch operations.
Coordinate with NOAA scientists and research teams to assess algorithm updates and transitions.
Ensure product consistency across sensors and over time.
Review operational metrics, quality indicators, and trend analyses.
Support preparation of technical status reports and briefings for NOAA leadership.
Assist the Project Manager in identifying technical risks and mitigation strategies.
Work closely with NOAA STAR and NESDIS scientists to ensure CoastWatch operations remain scientifically rigorous.
Support transition of research advances into sustained operations when directed by NOAA.
Required Education/Experience/Skills:
Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in oceanography, atmospheric science, remote sensing, or a related discipline.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in satellite environmental data analysis and operations.
Demonstrated experience with satellite ocean color or related environmental data products.
Experience working in NOAA operational or research environments.
Strong understanding of product validation, quality monitoring, and operational sustainment.
Direct experience supporting NOAA CoastWatch, or OSTA programs.
Experience with operational ocean color, chlorophyll, or marine ecosystem monitoring products.
Publications or technical leadership in satellite environmental data processing.

Salary at GST is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $120,000 to $170,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range or this position and is just one component of the GST total compensation package for employees.
