SUMMARY:
The Mayor's Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor's expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.
The Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency (ESR) Task Force within the New York City Office of Management and Budget (OMB) tracks citywide sustainability and resiliency funding and supports agencies in the formulation, evaluation, and management of climate-related policies and investments. The Resiliency Policy Unit conducts policy analysis, develops analytical tools, and coordinates across agencies to advance New York City's Climate Budgeting initiative, which integrates climate considerations into budgeting and decision-making to support long-term resilience to extreme heat, flooding, and other climate risks.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The intern will support research and data analysis related to New York City's Climate Budgeting initiative. Projects may include developing and maintaining datasets related to resiliency assets across city agencies, building data pipelines and analytical workflows in Python or R, mapping and analyzing spatial datasets in GIS, and translating climate projections into potential impacts on people, infrastructure, and the environment. The intern may also assist in synthesizing research and models to support reports, dashboards, and analytical products used in climate policy and budget planning.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The position requires some quantitative background and knowledge. Experience with Python and/or R for data analysis and workflow development, as well as familiarity with geospatial tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS, is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable working with publicly available datasets (e.g., NYC Open Data, NOAA), conducting analytical research, and interpreting scientific or technical information related to climate risks. Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills are important, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office. A background or interest in climate resilience, particularly related to extreme heat and flooding, is preferred.

Graduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program. Candidates should have strong analytical, quantitative, research and communication skills. Additionally, candidates must be proficient in MS Word and Excel
To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, graduate students must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program.
Compensation/Duration:
Summer Graduate Intern $20 per hour
Internships will run for 10 weeks, from June 1, 2026, to August 7, 2026. The work must be done during the regular workday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - no evenings or weekends.
This is a hybrid position with in-person days located at OMB's offices at 255 Greenwich Street
