Join Our Team as a Crime Analysis Specialist at the Tacoma Police Department
The Crime Analysis Unit (CAU) at the T acoma Police Department is seeking a Crime Analysis Specialist to join our dynamic team! The CAU provides timely and accurate tactical, strategic, administrative, and operational intelligence analysis of data relating to crime in support of the department's goals and information-led policing efforts. A Crime Analysis Specialist supports these efforts by collecting and categorizing crime data from a variety of sources, compiling and disseminating a variety of crime summaries, correspondence, data and related materials, and performing quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and integrity of collected data.
Please note, this is NOT a hybrid / telework position and will report to the office each day.
Key Responsibilities
Data Preparation: Prepare data using common tools like Excel, Access, and ESRI software.
Report Creation and Maintenance: Help us keep our reports accurate and up-to-date by creating, updating, and maintaining existing reports using descriptive statistics (Excel, SQL), contributing to our team's efforts.
GIS Enhancement: Dive into the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as you use ESRI tools to enhance reports and identify patterns and trends in crime data. Your insights will directly contribute to our department's strategies for keeping our community safe.
Ad-hoc Reporting: Assist in creating ad-hoc reports to support community safety efforts. Your fresh perspective and attention to detail will be invaluable as we tackle new challenges together.
Data Quality Control: Document analytical steps and assist in maintaining data quality control operations. Your dedication to accuracy and integrity will ensure that our analyses are reliable and actionable.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in math, statistics, criminal justice, behavior science or directly related field OR four (4) years of related experience in crime analysis, criminal justice, crime prevention, program planning, research, or data collection.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Must successfully complete an employment background investigation, polygraph examination, and a pre-employment medical examination that will include a drug screening.
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of:
The practices, procedures, and techniques of data management and collection.
The principles and practices of data management systems, spreadsheets, GIS, and creating visual presentations.
Extract information from a variety of databases and data warehouse connections using database language (e.g. SQL).
Statistical analysis and using data to understand patterns and trends.
Ability to:
Proficiently use computer software to include the full Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and ESRI products.
Understand the general operation of a law enforcement agency and the basics of the criminal justice system.
Perform technical and professional assignments with accuracy.
Perform statistical research and analysis.
Read and understand police reports.
Clearly and effectively communicate both orally and in writing within and outside of the organization.
Present ideas effectively in formal and informal situations
Work independently and as part of a team.

Examination Process
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligibility list for interview and hiring consideration. The eligibility list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur for approximately one year.
Applicants who are eligible for Veteran's Preference scoring criteria must attach a copy of their DD-214 member copy 4, (proof of military discharge form) at time of application , to be eligible for review for Veteran's Preference points, with redacted birth date and social security numbers.
This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 117. New employees must successfully complete a twelve-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification. Appointment is subject to passing a background check. For positions with the Tacoma Police Department and in support of Municipal Court staff, candidates must pass a Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) background check and be able to maintain CJIS certification.
