Overview:
The Information Management Systems (IMS) Group, within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is seeking qualified applicants to join its growing Software Development team. NND is a world-class leader in the development and deployment of technology for nuclear security.
Partnering with subject matter experts, our developers solve complex problems through software solutions including program management systems, mission-support systems, data collection, material/asset tracking, and financial tools. The primary job responsibilities for the position include:
- Developing web applications, primarily using a Microsoft tech stack.
- Collaborating with team members, Product Owners/Managers, subject matter experts, and other teams to refine requirements and translate into functional software using standardized coding techniques and conventions.
- Working with Quality Assurance specialists to resolve defects from manual and automated tests.
- Participating in code review sessions.
- Demonstrating feature implementations to product owners for acceptance.
Basic Requirements:
- Successful candidates will have either a B.S. degree in computer programming or related field with at least seven years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrate an understanding of object-oriented programming and writing maintainable, performant code following industry standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively, both independently and as a member of an agile development team is expected.
- Significant experience with front-end and/or back-end development is a must.

Special Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Policy (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
