SUMMARY
The Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission (AITRC) is seeking a self-motivated individual to fill the position of Stream Habitat Restoration Biologist, in the Ahtna Territory of southcentral Alaska. The incumbent will meet with the Ahtna Tribes and partners to gather information on areas of concern (anadromous fish barriers), create an inventory, plan and carry out fieldwork, prioritize fish passage projects, and apply for implementation funding. Additionally, habitat monitoring including but not limited to stream and air temperature using remote loggers will be a portion of this positions duties. Attend trainings when available to guarantee synchronized protocols, data, and ranking criteria.
RESPONSIBILIES INCLUDE:
Meet with local Tribes to gather information, record, and analyze data (anadromous fish barriers)
Conduct field surveys of areas of concern by foot, ATV, or boat
Catalog and prioritize potential restoration projects
Apply for funding through grant opportunities to implement restoration projects
Lead temperature monitoring efforts: basin-wide and Gulkana River Temperature Network
Submit progress and financial grant reports to NOAA (the funder of this award) on time
Write technical reports summarizing project findings and communicate results to scientific peers, tribal organizations, various advisory committees, and members of the public
Compiling and analyzing research data and presenting it to multiple audiences, including Tribal entities, scientific groups, the general public, and at regulatory meetings
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ecological Knowledge: Understanding of landscape ecology, stream ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, fishery biology, and watershed management
Project Management: Skills in planning or managing restoration projects including methods, protocols, budgeting, and logistics
Grant and Report Writing: Strong grant and report writing skills are essential to this position
Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes related to water quality and habitat restoration
