Summary Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Laboratories and Scientific Services, located in Houston, TX. Responsibilities As a Physical Scientist you will perform a full range of extremely difficult physical, chemical, and forensic analyses on evidentiary items seized and/or submitted to the regional and/or field laboratory. You will be a delegated authority to serve as an expert in forensic examinations and are given a wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgement. This position starts at a salary of $121,534.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $157,996.00 (GS-13, Step 10). While serving as a Physical Scientist (Forensics), your duties will include: Managing and examining highly complex forensic analyses of friction ridges by utilizing a full range of scientific methodologies and forensic techniques in support of the CBP mission to Protect the American people, safeguard our borders, and enhance the nation's economic prosperity; Initiating, performing, and overseeing examinations of a wide-variety of materials using forensic science disciplines, involving advanced mathematics, portions of chemistry, mechanics, physics, thermodynamics, weights, and measures, friction ridge examinations, computer science, physical properties and sciences, practice, techniques, procedures, and analytical chemical principles, theories and practices sufficient to perform the full range of duties involved in investigative analyses of crime scenes; Coordinating the development of programs, policies, and procedures to ensure laboratory procedures, forensic examinations, and evidence handling procedures are current and are within the scope of the relevant scientific community; and Designing and conducting innovative and advanced scientific research for the purpose of discovering new forensic techniques and validation methods and resolving complex forensic examination problems. Degree: Physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
