Job Summary
We are currently seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented Energetics Engineer to join our Advanced Materials and Energetics group. This position is located in West Jefferson, OH .
We are currently seeking a Research and Development Energetics Engineer to assist in Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) in the subject area of energetic materials and components. Our Energetics Team is staffed with experts in all manner of arms, ammunition and explosives including munition design and engineering, chem/bio defeat devices, advanced performance measurements for energetics, advanced energetic initiation, and energetic material formulations and material science. This expertise includes operating with the complex safety, security, and environmental requirements and regulations that come with energetic materials. We take advanced technology concepts and materials from the laboratory scale to an actual fieldable prototype. The HERLA is a one-of-a-kind, privately owned facility located on a 1200- acre plot of Battelle-owned land in West Jefferson, Ohio. The Energetics Team and HERLA are certified to handle the full range of energetic materials including Hazard Class 1 explosive materials, propellants, pyrotechnics, and ordnance items.
Responsibilities
Lead and perform experiments involving energetic materials and/or components.
Identify and implement technical laboratory and process improvements.
Interact with PMs, PIs, and clients for the purposes of understanding and ensuring customer expectations and contract deliverables are met on-time and on budget.
Maintain, test, troubleshoot, repair, and ensure the performance of various equipment, instrumentation, and systems.
Develop test safety plans and hazard analyses and ensure resulting practices are effectively integrated into the work being performed.
Design and fabricate various tooling, fixtures, hardware, and test apparatuses as required by project.
Analyze data and recommend modifications to experiments or procedures to meet desired specifications/deliverables.
Assist with the technical writing of internal and external reports and presentations.
Assist with proposal efforts as needed.
Key Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree and 2 years of experience or a more advanced degree (master's and/or Ph.D.) and 0 years of experience. The degrees must be in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, physics, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, material science, chemistry, or a related STEM field
US Citizen and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree and 3-5 years of relevant work experience
Experience performing technical laboratory work in hazardous work environments.
Demonstrated performance of safely conducting hazardous operations involving the use of energetic materials, guns, high voltage, lasers, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
Demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate complex work activities, document & present results, and manage resources.
Demonstrated ability to execute R&D activities with evolving requirements in a fast-paced environment.
Demonstrated ability to operate high voltage electron gun experiments.
Familiarity with high speed instrumentation and laser diagnostics such as photon doppler velocimetry (PDV).
Experience with electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pressure systems.
Experience with solid modeling CAD software, 3D printing, engineering drawing creation and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment.
