The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for an Instructor (Library Media Specialist) position in the New York State School for the Blind. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Developing and administer an integrated school library media program;
• Develop lesson plans and provide instruction to students in accordance with NYS Standards;
• Instruct students and staff in effective use of media, information, and technology literacy skills;
• Evaluate, select, and procure print and digital resources and related equipment/materials;
• Develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation, services and facility use for a 21st century school library media program;
• Implement a results-oriented information and technology literacy skills curriculum integrated with subject area curriculum through instructor partnerships;
• Provide leadership and guidance for effectively integrating technologies with instruction to create 21st century learning opportunities;
• Support instructors with research engines appropriate for our student population; and
• Provide support for our students and staff in locating materials necessary to complete research related activities.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess:
• a bachelor’s degree or higher AND a valid NYS Teaching Certificate in School Media Specialist (Librarian) or Library Media Specialist AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Special consideration will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:
• NYS Teaching Certificate in Special Education
• Certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)
Additional comments regarding the vacancy. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, 10-month position. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and/or transcripts and New York State teaching certification in Special Education will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to possess New York State teaching certification in Special Education at the time of hire. Continued employment as an Instructor is dependent upon maintaining New York State teaching certification in Special Education. Candidates with an Initial New York State teaching certification in Special Education will be required to obtain a Permanent New York State teaching certification in Special Education prior to the expiration of the Initial New York State teaching certification in Special Education. Failure to maintain a New York State teaching certification in Special Education will result in removal from employment. The work schedule for this position will be 7:30 am – 3:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.
