Support NASA missions! The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is a multi-mission science and flight operations center for NASA's flagship observatories on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, Maryland.
The position is with the Science Instrument Calibration Software Branch (SCSB) within the Data Management Division (DMD).
This position can support hybrid work onsite and at home. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
Senior Software Engineer:
Primary responsibilities include:
In this position, you will be responsible for developing software for processing astronomical data in a fast-paced multi-mission environment. You will build calibration software capable of precise reductions of astronomical observations and interact with astronomers to deliver innovative solutions to solve cutting-edge astronomical problems.
Additional responsibilities include:
Developing software for the James Webb Space Telescope pipeline
Contributing to open source python packages for scientific analysis
Automating pipeline processing and data quality monitoring
Qualifications and Job Requirements:
You are able to identify problems and implement solutions and offer guidance to development teams and end-users.
Expertise in using Python
Experience with open source libraries like NumPy, SciPy, Astropy
Experience with astronomical data
Familiarity using Git in a team setting
Familiarity with testing tools
Familiarity with spectroscopy observations is a plus
Experience with C is a plus
Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Bachelor's degree in: Computer/Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Astronomy.
Education or professional background in astronomy or software development in a research environment is advantageous.
