The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC), part of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), invites applications for a full-time Research Engineer I-IV in the focus area of Data Visualization.
The Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) (https://bcdc.tamus.edu/) - located on the 2,300-acre RELLIS Campus in Bryan, TX - is an ecosystem for agile technology development and service-member-inspired research. The BCDC is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense, Texas A&M University System, and the State of Texas. The $200 million complex is designed to bring together researchers from U.S. universities, the military, and the private sector for collaboration, demonstrations, and high-tech testing of initiatives to help accelerate military innovation for our nation's defense. Research Engineer - Data Visualization, Levels II - IV
Job Description Summary:
The Research Engineer - Data Visualization independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields at the Innovation Proving Grounds (IPG) and George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC). The IPG provides an outdoor test and experimentation facility capable of rigorously assessing a myriad of technologies, sensors, platforms, networks and testing processes in an operationally relevant environment. It is postured to support the test and evaluation of technology across the Technology Readiness Levels, ranging from innovative prototypes to fully developed programs. Key to the IPG is its agile approach to testing and test processes which position it as a Proving Ground for Proving Grounds.
Responsibilities:
Analyze complex data sets to identity trends, patterns, and insights.
Collaborate with other research staff to understand data sources and requirements.
Design and implement interactive visualizations using tools such as D3.js, Tableau, Power Bl, or similar platforms.
Create prototypes and proof-of-concept visualizations to explore data insights.
Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in data visualization and user experience design.
Evaluate the effectiveness of different visualization techniques.
Document the design process, methodologies, and findings to share with the team and stakeholders. - Work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure that visualizations meet user needs.
Prepare reports and presentations to communicate insights derived from visualizations.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, software developers, and business analysts, to integrate visualizations into existing systems.
Participate in team meetings and contribute to project planning and execution.
Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer II
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.- Foundational knowledge of ML algorithms and their outputs.
Two years of relevant experience.
Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer III
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.- Foundational knowledge of ML algorithms and their outputs.
Four years of relevant experience.
Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer IV
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.- Foundational knowledge of ML algorithms and their outputs.
Six years of relevant experience.
Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:
Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Expertise in data visualization libraries (D3.js, Matplotlib).- Experience in developing interactive data visualizations {e.g. D3.js, Plotly, Tableau).
Strong programming in Python, R, or JavaScript.- Familiarity with data libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy).- Proficient in database querying (SQL/NoSQL).- Experience working with ML models and Al insights.- Strong understanding of data structures and performance optimization.- Experience working with machine learning algorithms {e.g., decision trees, neural networks) and visualizing their results (e.g., confusion matrices, ROC curves).
Solid grasp of UI/UX principles for effective interfaces.- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.- Strong mentoring, interpersonal, written communication, and organizational skills.- Ability to interpret and represent large, complex datasets effectively.- Self-starter, team-oriented with ability to multi-task.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's or Ph.D. in related fields (Data Visualization, HCI, Machine Learning).- Certifications or coursework in data analytics, visual design, or machine learning.
Familiarity with ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).- Knowledge of advanced ML visualization techniques (e.g., SHAP, feature importance).
Experience with Geospatial Data Disualization (GIS) and AutoML tools.- Deep learning model interpretability and visualizing activations/latent spaces.
