Position Overview
Riverside Research seeks a Materials Engineer to provide subject matter expertise (SME) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (RX), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The SME position will support optical coatings research as well as plan, direct, and carry out in-house and extramural research and development (R&D) of materials-based technologies with an emphasis in functional optical coating applications. Research responsibilities for this position will focus on the testing and evaluation of optical coatings in support of program deliverables. The qualified candidate will conduct experimental characterization of emergent optical coating technologies in conjunction with existing in-house capabilities. This is a full-time position located at Wright-Patterson AFB.
Responsibilities
Plans, evaluates, and recommends technical and economic factors involved in the cost-effective utilization of materials
Applies knowledge of material science to recommend engineering and manufacturing changes to attain design objectives
Responsible for the Research, Development, and Test and Evaluation activities across a variety of functional subsystems
Work effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians that interface across projects to ensure success
Investigate target material interaction with optical propagation to optimize performance
Interface with technical personnel and customers to clarify tasking, identify problems, suggest changes, and develop and document final solutions
Lead programs and tasks; develop innovative technical concepts and development activities
Prepare presentations for leadership and decision makers internal to our government customers
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science & engineering, chemical engineering, or related science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) field
Active Top Secret security clearance
5+ years of materials research experience
Understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum and optical materials
Excellent technical communication skills as demonstrated by research conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications
Experience with experimental optical characterization of thin films or metasurfaces (e.g., UV/Vis/NIR and FTIR spectrophotometry, polarization-dependent spectrophotometry, temperature-dependent spectrophotometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry, etc.)
Experience with compositional, morphological, or topological experimental characterization of optical thin films or metasurfaces (e.g., XPS, XRD, XRR, AFM, SEM, TEM, etc.)
Experience working in a laboratory environment and able to lift or carry up to 25 lbs
Ability to be self-motivated, work independently, and seamlessly engage in proficient collaborative teamwork dynamics
Ability to travel up to 10% of the year to attend research conferences, program reviews, industry meetings, or other collaborative events
