The Makers Club Fashion Design Specialist is a multifaceted role, blending creativity, technical expertise, and entrepreneurship to inspire and educate youth in the art and business of fashion design. This individual will guide students through the process of creating market-ready fashion collections, emphasizing the intersection of design, business, and technology.
Job Description We are seeking a passionate and creative Fashion Design Specialist to lead our Makers Club Fashion Design segment. The ideal candidate will inspire and educate students in grades 6-8 through the process of fashion design, from conceptualization to creation. This role involves teaching various fashion design techniques, guiding students in the use of different materials and tools.
Essential Job Functions
Teach students fundamental fashion skills, including sewing and fabric selection, while linking activities to real-world business practices.
Guide students in designing saleable collections by exploring:
Seasonal color trends and appropriate fabric choices.
Production techniques for creating cohesive collections.
Prepare students for entrepreneurial success through lessons on:
Product ideation and simple business plan creation.
Marketing, branding, and leveraging social media for exposure.
Organizing and selling at bazaars or marketplaces, with multiple opportunities throughout the school year.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized fashion design space.
Supervise and assist students in using sewing machines, hand sewing, and other tools safely.
Ultimate Goal:
Empower students with entrepreneurial knowledge and skills, fostering self-sufficiency and confidence through ownership of their creative work.
Technology Integration:
Utilize technology to enhance curriculum, including managing files, folders, and online resources.
Apply graphic design or Photoshop skills to prepare student artwork for projects and social media promotions.
Qualifications:
Business-minded approach to fashion and design.
Proficient in sewing and fashion production techniques.
Strong computer skills, including basic graphic design and file management.
Passion for mentoring and inspiring creativity in youth.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
May be required to walk up and down stairs.
May have to lift or move objects/materials as needed.
Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but may be required to interact with the community at-large during trips or events.
The Makers Club Fashion Design Specialist will be required to report to the school and interact with staff, students, parents, and the school administration.
At the time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
